Planning a hosta garden but not sure where to start?

Many gardeners determine plant selection by:
Leaf...color, texture, shape
chosen for visual effects in the garden...

Design tips:
Repeating the same color or variety provides uniformity.

Dark colors add depth to the garden and accent brighter colors.

Bright colors bring attention to the area.

Contrasting colors accent both. i.e. Blues look bluer when planted with golds.

Blooming features
for fragrance, floral displays in the garden and cutting, and late summer blooms...

Bloom tips:
Hosta blooms well in shade. For enhanced flowering, provide a few hours of sunlight!
Many blue leaf hostas have white blooms. A nice contrast!
On most varieties, hosta seeds will not germinate or will not produce the true variety. Ventricosa seeds will reproduce correctly. Gather them in the fall and scatter in a woodland area for a naturalized effect. You will see tiny seedlings next spring!

For Hosta with fragrant and/or unusual blooms, visit our homepage and browse the menu bars under the heading "Shopping by Leaf Color and Special Features".

Mature plant height
where uniformity or specified height is important in the planting design...

To select by mature plant height, use these "quick picks".
Dwarf 4"-8" Short 10"-12" Medium 14"-20"
Tall 22"-32" XtraTall 36"-48"
Note: Mature heights quoted are averages. Some variance can occur with environmental conditions.
